GICT DIGITAL GREEN INITIATIVE WORKSHOPS

High Schools

Workshop 1: “Climate Change: Understanding and Taking Action”

Objective: To educate high school teachers and students about climate change, its impacts, and inspire them to take meaningful action.

Activities:

  • Climate Change Presentation: Begin with a presentation on the science of climate change, its causes, and its potential consequences. Include local and global examples.
  • Carbon Footprint Calculations: Provide resources for students to calculate their own carbon footprints. Discuss ways to reduce individual and collective carbon footprints.
  • Group Debates: Divide students into groups and assign them different perspectives on climate change (e.g., policymakers, activists, skeptics). Have them engage in a structured debate.
  • Climate Action Plan: Guide students in creating a practical action plan for reducing their school’s environmental impact. Include goals, strategies, and timelines.
  • Guest Speaker or Virtual Tour: If possible, invite a local expert or arrange a virtual tour related to climate change, such as a renewable energy facility or a sustainable agriculture project.

Workshop 2: “Biodiversity Conservation and Habitat Restoration”

Objective: To raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity, and empower high school teachers and students to engage in habitat restoration efforts.

Activities:

  • Biodiversity Overview: Provide an overview of biodiversity, explaining its significance for ecosystems, human well-being, and the planet as a whole.
  • Habitat Mapping and Assessment: Teach students how to assess the health and diversity of a local habitat. Provide tools like field guides, binoculars, and recording sheets.
  • Invasive Species Removal: Organize a hands-on activity where students work together to remove invasive species from a designated area. Emphasize the importance of maintaining balanced ecosystems.
  • Native Plant Propagation: Provide materials for students to propagate native plants. Discuss the benefits of using native plants in habitat restoration projects.
  • Community Engagement Plan: Guide students in developing a plan to involve the broader community in habitat restoration efforts. Include outreach strategies, events, and partnerships.

Workshop 3: “Sustainable Living: From Theory to Practice”

Objective: To introduce high school teachers and students to sustainable living practices that they can incorporate into their daily lives.

Activities:

  • Sustainable Living Principles: Provide an overview of sustainable living, covering topics like energy efficiency, waste reduction, and ethical consumerism.
  • DIY Sustainable Products: Conduct a hands-on activity where students create eco-friendly products (e.g., reusable shopping bags, natural cleaning solutions) using readily available materials.
  • Ethical Consumerism Scavenger Hunt: Challenge students to identify and evaluate sustainable and eco-friendly products in their local area. Discuss the impact of conscious consumer choices.
  • Local Food Sourcing: Discuss the benefits of supporting local and sustainable food systems. Arrange a visit to a local farmer’s market or community-supported agriculture (CSA) farm.
  • Personal Sustainability Action Plans: Have students reflect on their own lifestyles and develop action plans for incorporating sustainable practices into their daily routines.
